Cool Cosmic Stream

8 by 5 ft acrylic on canvas

Drinking from Cool Cosmic Stream challenges objectivity through the lense of surveillance and irony. How does simply changing the color of an ordinary object shift your human perspective? I was inspired by the Yves Klein Blue portrait in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, as well as graffiti artist Alec Monopoly, ceramic artist Solem, and painter Archer Defterios, who likewise use Klein Blue as an accent color in their work. I used ultramarine-blue acrylic paint, spray paint, Mod Podge, acrylic markers, and magazine images to complete this series. I include an image of my eyes from an airport Pre-Check kiosk to extrapolate themes of control and surveillance. I likewise leaned on my graphic design skill set with the placement of the gum next to the toothbrush to deliver an ironic goal. This project was originally created as a continuation of BLEU.

The Corporate Eye

The Corporate Eye series examines the following questions: What happens to the human body as we age? What happens to the mind when we become slaves of the corporate world? How does the nine-to-five slowly destroy the body? This project was created less than one hundred days before my high school graduation when I was struggling to accept my own coming of age. I am a creature of habit who functions best when disciplined to a routine—large-scale changes like entering adulthood, college, the capitalistic work culture of the US were thoughts that opened the door to fear and anxiety. The Corporate Eye uses an interactive display with holograms and videos to play with different scales and mediums focusing on the human body. This series hopes to somewhat romanticize coming of age in order to alleviate these fears.
